The first Zara store was opened by Amancio Ortega in 1975, at La Coruna, Galicia. The store was named Zorba, but there was a problem with the name. A bar two blocks away had the same name Zorba and the owner requested Amancio to change the name or there would be confusion with the garment store and the bar bearing the same name. After re-arranging the letters the name ‘Zara’ was chosen.
