Edeka operates as a cooperative that was founded in 1898. The first store located in Berlin, Germany. 

Edeka is currently headquartered in Hamburg, Germany and operates over 4000 stores with the Edeka name. Edeka is a privately owned cooperative. The Edeka Group is the largest grocery store company in Germany ranging from small corner markets to huge hypermarkets.

Presently Edeka is made up of many cooperatives of independent grocery/retail stores operating under the organization Edeka Zentrale AG & Co KG.  The company employs over 250,000 people, and revenue for 2013 was over 58 billion dollars. Holding 25% of the existing market.
