Unibail-Rodamco Launched Überseequartier Project In Hamburg

Europe’s greatest inner-city project (157ha) develops in partnership with the City of Hamburg.

A groundbreaking celebration of the southern Überseequartier in the presence of Olaf Scholz, the First Mayor of the City of Hamburg, and Christophe Cuvillier, CEO, and Chairman of the Management Board of Unibail-Rodamco.



Überseequartier is a unique 210,000m2 GLA destination in the heart of the HafenCity area,  nearly 1 km south of the city center of Hamburg. The project is an extension of the city center of the second largest German city, the center of this lively neighborhood will provide residents and visitors with a unique mix of shopping, restaurants, and entertainment.
“Überseequartier is perfectly in line with Unibail-Rodamco’s strategy, which focuses on exceptional projects in prime catchment areas in Europe,” stated Christophe Cuvillier, CEO, and Chairman of the Management Board of Unibail-Rodamco.

The project will also include three residential buildings, three hotels, and three office buildings, of which an iconic high-rise tower designed by Christian de Portzamparc. A cruise terminal, welcoming the largest cruise ships, as well as generous public spaces offering breathtaking views of the Elbe River, will complete the scheme.

“Überseequartier will be the heart of the HafenCity, an open and bustling urban space. It has to be coherent with our idea of a cosmopolitan and accessible city. We want a dynamic quarter with many original buildings, cafes, restaurants, offices and apartments, with good transport connection and shopping facilities that are so attractive that they enhance the entire city center”, stated Olaf Scholz, First Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg.

Unibail-Rodamco will start the excavation works, to be completed in the course of 2017. The first stone will be placed at the beginning of 2018. The opening of the southern Überseequartier is scheduled for the second half of 2021.
