The most exciting new retail developments and shopping mall expansion projects will be built in the next few years. There is no doubt that the US remains the biggest retail market worldwide and one of the very best places in the world to go shopping. As well as having a magnificent collection of long-established stores and malls to choose from, American shoppers can also discover some exciting new developments that have opened or been refurbished in the recent past.
These centers are dotted across the country and offer a variety of shopping experiences that are designed to keep the public coming back for more time and time again. Among the centers that have now been successfully opened or re-opened to shoppers in recent years are Westfield World Trade Center in New York, Gloucester Outlet Mall in South Jersey, Maxwell Shopping Center in Chicago, New City in Chicago, Liberty Center in Cincinnati, and The Village at Westfield Topanga.
So what are the most exciting new developments and expansion projects that we can expect to join those on this list in the next few years?
Empire Outlets Staten Island – New York
Tagged as New York’s only outlet destination, Empire Outlets at Staten Island promises to give shoppers a chance to get luxury brands at bargain prices. This will be one of the big draws for customers in the new waterfront entertainment district in Staten Island.
At just 20 minutes in the ferry from Manhattan, this 100 store outlet is expected to attract big crowds when it opens in November 2017. There will be plenty of interesting food and drink options along the waterfront, as well as a boutique hotel with stunning views of New York City from its rooftop lounge.
City Point Brooklyn – New York
This massive project in downtown Brooklyn is another development that seems to have been on the horizon for some years. As part of the overall mixed-use project here, there is a big retail complex that is now partially open for business.
Among the big name retailers here is Target, with their new store opened at the end of January 2017. The Alamo Drafthouse cinema is also revealed, with Trader Joe’s and Flying Tiger Copenhagen due to open soon.
The Shops at Syosset Park – Long Island, New York
A 2018 opening is planned for this innovative shopping destination at Oyster Bay in New York. The mall is at the heart of a mixed-use development that should be open by the end of 2018.
There will be 450,000 square feet of retail, dining and entertainment space here, together with offices and homes. The overall project is known as Syosset Park, and it is described as a “walking village” that provides everything needed for a happy life in the 21st century.
American Dream Meadowlands – East Rutherford, New Jersey
The development of this complex in New Jersey seems to have been going on for a long time, as various issues have cropped up since the plans were first unveiled back in 2003. However, it is now believed that by mid-2018 it should finally be open to the public.
There will be more than 450 stores in here, and it is also planned to include many exciting entertainment options. The Pepsi Globe, an indoor ski slope, and in indoor ice rink are among the features that have been mentioned as being part of the center.
The Wharf – Washington DC
Classed as an exciting day trip destination by the water, The Wharf brings together shopping, dining, and entertainment. Fresh seafood at DC’s Southwest Waterfront is among the current highlights, with October 2017 seeing a range of new stores and restaurants open.
This will be the end of Phase I and Phase II will then start in the middle of 2018. The second phase will be completed in 2021, and this mile-long stretch of the Potomac River is sure to be hugely popular by then.
Westfield Century City – Los Angeles, CA
Rather than an entirely new mall, this is a massive $800 million expansion project at a center that was originally opened to the public back in 1964 under the name of the Century Shopping Center. The current changes have been on the drawing board for a while, and later in 2017, they should finally be completed.
Among the expected highlights are a remodeled Bloomingdale’s, a new Macy’s that will take up two levels, a new Nordstrom store, and an Eataly. The total space occupied will be 422,000 square feet, with a variety of formal and casual dining options expected to bring plenty of hungry shoppers here.
6x6 – San Francisco, California
Set in a six story building, this unique new center is all about luxury retail mixed with culture and style. The opening is scheduled for spring of 2017, and the plans look very exciting.
The full list of tenants isn’t yet available at the time of writing, but top quality shopping, dining, and entertainment have been promised. With 250,000 square feet to fill there are sure to be some big name tenants to come in, although the developers have admitted to being “picky” about who they choose.
The Galleria – Houston, Texas
Typically described as being the most popular mall in Houston, The Galleria is one of the nation’s biggest shopping destinations. Despite its huge, consistent success it also recently underwent an extensive revamp that saw it get even bigger and better.
Among the most important changes is the addition of a giant new Saks Fifth Avenue store that is already open. 35 luxury retailers and several quality restaurants – such as Nobu and Fig & Olive – have also joined the mall as part of the remodeling.
The Shops at Clearfork – Fort Worth, Texas
Spring 2017 sees the first phase of this new look unveiled. A 90,000 square foot Neiman Marcus store will anchor the mall and help to re-position it as the most upscale shopping development in Fort Worth.
The rest of the stores are scheduled to open in September 2017. The plans include a quality movie theater and a high-class bowling and bocce venue. Big name retailers such as Burberry, Louis Vitton, and Tiffany have all been linked with a move here.
La Plaza Mall – McAllen, Texas
This Simon Property Group mall in Texas is one of their most successful in the whole country. The fall of 2017 will see a massively renovated center opened, with additional parking and new retail space.
Some new restaurants will also join as part of this redevelopment, with an extra 220, 000 square feet being added in total. Al fresco dining, improved restrooms, and enhanced lighting are some of the changes that regular shoppers are likely to notice.
Norfolk Premium Outlets – Norfolk, Virginia
The summer of 2017 will see a brand new premium outlet destination open for business in Norfolk. This 320,000 square feet development will feature 90 designer and big-name brands.
Benefiting from easy road access, this center will include Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake & Hampton Road in its catchment areas. A full list of the retailers who will be operating from here will be released nearer to the opening date.
Aventura Mall – Miami-Dade, Florida
The 2017 holiday season is when we can expect to see this center open with 212,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space added to the existing mall. Among the most notable changes will be a new piazza, food hall, and four new restaurants.
A new parking deck and a VIP concierge area are among the other alterations to be carried out. Of course, this is already one of the biggest malls in the US, and it has been around since the early 1980s.
Dania Pointe – Dania Beach, Florida
The shopping experience will be at the heart of a 102-acre mixed use development. Indeed, the food offers and stores here will occupy an impressive 1 million square feet.
With excellent access from Interstate 95 and a big catchment area, Dania Pointe sits next to Oakwood Plaza. There will be a mix of shopping, entertainment and dining options to choose from in a beautiful setting just a few minute from the beach here.
Town Center at Sawgrass – Ft Lauderdale, Florida
The Simon Property Group is planning a big expansion that should turn the Town Center at Sawgrass into a far more attractive destination for locals and tourists alike. Work will be carried out throughout 2017 with an eye on a fall 2017 opening.
It is expected that the addition of 4 new sit-down restaurants will help to attract more visitors here. 25 new full retailers and parking for 2,000 vehicles are among the other big changes that shoppers will soon be able to check out here.
