IKEA to open its first shopping mall in India

Health, sports, and sustainable development will play a vital role in the project's conception.

Ingka Centres has unveiled plans to build its first mall in India. The €400 million project will take place in the city of Gurgaon, southwest of Delhi. 

The new mixed-use center of 130,000 square meters will offer its customers a shopping gallery with international and local brands, gastronomic space, and combine a hotel, exhibition space, and other facilities. 

Health, sports, and sustainability will play a key role in the project’s concept. The mall will also serve as a local community center, where festivals and exhibitions will be held throughout the year.

Ingka said that coming to India is part of the company's strategy to explore new markets and build a portfolio of retail centers that will be "future-proof and appealing to all." 

"Although construction will begin in early 2022, the new location is expected to create more than 2,500 jobs and further the growth of organized retail in India," Ingka Centres said.

Earlier, Ingka had reportedly announced plans to invest around one billion euros in the Indian market. In February 2021, it was reported that it had purchased a site to build its first store in Noida on the outskirts of Delhi, but the company later said the mall in Gurgaon would be the first to open in the country.
