Swedish furniture and home goods retailer IKEA has announced the opening of its first city store in Mumbai. A monostore is located in the R City Mall. The store is the fifth in the furniture giant's portfolio in India's growing market. The total area of the store is about 6,700 square meters, which is several times less than the classic IKEA furniture center. The store offers more than 7,000 "well-designed, affordable, quality, functional and environmentally friendly home improvement products," the company said.
Physically there are only 2,000 items in the store's assortment, with another 5,000 available for ordering. Citystore has 15 rooms and ideas and a 150-seat restaurant, which will serve Indian and Swedish delicacies with a variety of vegetarian dishes.
With the store opening, the retailer expects to attract about 4 million visitors by the end of the year. The store's opening created 180 new jobs, 76 percent of which were filled by locals. Currently the retailer cooperates with 12 local suppliers.
IKEA officially entered the Mumbai market in 2020, launching the retailer's long-awaited expansion into India. The company officially entered the country a year earlier with the launch of an online store. New outlets later appeared in Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune.
"With our growing retail presence, Maharashtra becomes the strongest omnichannel presence market in India with a large format store, city stores and online platforms for our customers to shop from IKEA. We continue to stand by our vision to create a better everyday life for people," said Susanne Pulverer, Chief Executive Officer & Chief Sustainability Officer at IKEA India.
