Amazon has officially introduced electric vans, which will now deal with the delivery of goods to consumers.
It was stated that the cute electric cars, created by Rivian startup, are equipped with the most modern technologies designed to simplify the life of the driver. Thus, the cameras' presence, the data from which will be displayed on a large touch screen, will provide a full 360-degree view, no "blind spots." And the digital assistant Amazon Alexa will simplify tasks such as plotting a route to the delivery address.
Vans are specially equipped to meet the needs of couriers. Everything is made to get quick access to the goods being transported and find what you need. And the door on the driver's side has additional protection.
However, no technical details have yet been disclosed, and we know nothing about such parameters as battery capacity or power reserve on one charge.
According to the e-commerce giant, by 2022, they will have already used 10,000 Rivian electric vans. And by 2030, the entire Amazon fleet will consist of electric vehicles. It is part of the commitment to become a company with zero CO2 emissions by 2040.
Rivian - a relatively new name in the electric vehicle industry - made its debut with its pickup and SUV in November 2018, although work in this area has been carried out since 2009. Initially, the startup intended to create a competitor to Tesla cars, but later it was decided to switch to work on commercial vehicles.
In 2019, Rivian managed to get a massive investment from many major players, including Amazon. The size of the asset from Jeff Bezos is not disclosed. Still, it is known that the investment from Ford was 500 million dollars, and from Cox Automotive, a company specializing in logistics - 350 million dollars. Other significant investments were followed by the total amount of which in 2020 was $2.5 billion.
