Sihlcity

Sihlcity occupies the former Sihl paper mill site in Zurich’s Wiedikon district, a factory founded in 1836 that ceased production in 1990 after the industrial decline of the 1980s left the site derelict through the following decade. Architect Theo Hotz designed the roughly 100,000 sqm mixed-use redevelopment, built between 2003 and 2007 at a cost of approximately CHF 600 million and financed by Swiss Prime Site AG and Credit Suisse Real Estate, preserving four original mill buildings including a 65-metre brick chimney as a visible link to the site’s industrial history.

Arena Cinemas runs an 18-screen multiplex within the complex, including 4DX and ScreenX formats, alongside Papiersaal, a concert and event venue that takes its name directly from the site’s paper-mill past. A wellness and fitness center, the Minicity children’s play area, and a chapel round out a tenant mix built for a full-day visit rather than pure retail traffic, a mixed-use model unusual for Switzerland’s comparatively small-format shopping center market.

P&C’s first Swiss store anchored the property at opening, alongside a broader fashion and electronics tenant floor; the complex draws roughly 20,000 daily visitors and provides employment for around 2,300 people on site. A Four Points hotel operated within the complex until its 2024 replacement by The Home Hotel, a French-restaurant-anchored property with Dada-movement-inspired interiors.

That adaptive-reuse model, an industrial brownfield converted into retail, offices, residential space and hospitality rather than a purpose-built greenfield mall, is what distinguishes Sihlcity from Zurich’s other shopping destinations, and it earned the property the European Shopping Award in 2008 along with multiple City of Zurich recognitions for urban redevelopment.
