Shoppers World Brampton hosts over 190 stores. Expansion will take over the former bus terminal as mall parking. Easy access to the mall is provided by the new terminal for Brampton Transit and Mississauga Transit systems at the south side of the complex and a GO Transit bus stop located to the north of the new terminal.
Originally created Shoppers World Danforth in 1961 by Elder Mines & Development Ltd. and Peel Village Developments and opened in 1962, Shoppers World Brampton was built in a field purchased by Charles F. Watson of Peel-Elder Ltd., the developer of the Brampton’s Peel Village community. Original tenants included: Loblaws, Zellers, Yolles, Bata Shoe, a Maher shoe store, Lady Ellis dress shop, Bi-Rite Drugs, Tip Top Tailors and banks. The plan called for a total 55 stores, a department store, a bowling alleys and a movie theatre.
Opened in 1969, Shoppers World Brampton was Brampton’s first indoor mall. It was anchored by: Kmart, Dominion and Canada Safeway. The movie theatre re-opened as a Jumbo Video. In 1971, Simpsons Ltd. department store built at Shoppers World Brampton, at a cost in over $2 million. Peel-Elder Ltd. promised to expand the mall and their Peel Village development with a high rise apartment building and town houses, a motel-hotel convention centre and an office building on 185 acres purchased for expansion purposes in 1959.
In 1997, the mall owners were Pensionfund Realty Limited. A massive renovation of Shoppers World Brampton brought new customers. Shoppers World Brampton is home to some of Brampton’s oldest family-operated businesses. While Shoppers World Brampton is still busy, many newer malls have been constructed.
The addition of a Canadian Tire big-box store to the Main Street side of the mall has changed the facade of the Shoppers World Brampton. Smaller stores have moved or closed to allow for this additional anchor store. Staples Business Depot, another big-box format store, also moved into the mall in the locations previously held by Pascals and later, Winners. The Bay closed in May 2007, and Price Chopper closed a few months later, replaced in 2008 by the multi-ethnic Ocean’s Fresh Food Market.
The former Simpsons/Bay store space has been razed and plans include redevelopment of the north end of the mall. In 2013 a Target store, one of the first 24 locations to open in Canada.
Skims, Primark, Ulta Beauty, and Pacsun all opened their first international stores in Dubai within 90 days.
