Israeli-owned Jupiter Group opened Jupiter City Shopping Center in June 2008 in Pitești, Argeș County, not the Black Sea resort town of Jupiter that shares its name; the mall took its name from its developer’s corporate identity, not its location, a coincidence that has led some records to misplace the property on Romania’s coast rather than more than 200 km inland. Austrian retail investor Supernova Group acquired the property from Jupiter Group’s local entity, Mall Retail Rom, in a distressed sale in November 2020, valued at under €20 million and partly financed by Erste Bank, marking Supernova’s first acquisition in Romania.
Supernova rebranded the property Supernova Pitești in April 2022, alongside a roughly €20 million expansion and modernization program that added a retail park section and a food court. At approximately 53,000 sqm of leasable space post-expansion, the property carries Carrefour for grocery, Decathlon for sporting goods, Media Galaxy for electronics and Mobexpert for furniture, with H&M, Bershka, Pull&Bear, Stradivarius, New Yorker, CCC, Colin’s and Sephora anchoring fashion and beauty across more than 90 stores.
Supernova, headquartered in Graz, Austria, operates more than 20 shopping centers across Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Slovakia, Germany, Serbia and Romania, with a portfolio of 77 properties valued at roughly €1.7 billion. Following the Pitești acquisition, the group expanded its Romanian footprint further by buying six Cora-branded hypermarket sites from the Louis Delhaize and Galimmo groups.
That acquisition-then-rebrand pattern, an Austrian pan-regional investor buying a distressed, locally-owned asset and then folding it into a unified group-wide brand identity, mirrors how Supernova has grown across Central and Southeast Europe more broadly, and reflects a wave of ownership consolidation that has touched several mid-size Romanian regional malls originally built by local or Israeli developers during the 2005-2010 boom.
