The outdoor shopping center, Chesapeake Center, can be reached by taking exit 11B off Portsmouth Boulevard, off interstate I-664. It is home to more than 20 specialty and unique stores, including Michael’s, Value City Furniture and PetSmart.
For a variety in food offerings, there is AJ Gators, Buffet City and Japan Samurai. When you visit this center, be sure to visit its sister mall, Chesapeake Square, which can be found next door to Chesapeake Center.
The mall offers shoppers a range of 100 stores, with anchors, such as Target, Sears, Macy’s, JC Penney, Cinemark Theatres and Burlington Coat Factory. There are several dining facilities at the food court, including Big Woody’s and Piccadilly Cafeteria, situated at the main entrance to the mall, along with Dairy Queen & Sbarro and Chick-Fil-A.
Simon Property Group owns 75% of the centre and its occupancy rate remains constant at 86.5%. This is currently Simon’s mall property’s fourth largest venue in Virginia.
The mall was completed and opened during October 1989 on what was formerly swamp and forest land of the Western Branch section of Chesapeake. The business district expanded with two additional shopping centers, including the adjacent Chesapeake Center which is also owned by Simon, including a Value City Furniture, Dollar Tree and Kmart, along with the Crossroads at the Chesapeake Square on the other side of the street which contained Ross Dress for Less, Best Buy, Old Navy at the spot previously occupied by Walmart, and a Tuesday Morning and Dollar Tree Market at the previously occupied by Circuit City building.
