Cafaro Company opened Ashtabula Mall in 1992 in Ashtabula, Ohio, later renamed Ashtabula Towne Square, built with capacity for 70 stores and a food court. Reported floor-area figures for the property vary considerably across sources, from roughly 540,000 to more than a million sqft; the property has since passed to Sure Fire Group LLC, its current owner.

As of the most recent available reporting, all of the property’s historical anchor spaces are vacant, and the interior carries only around 25 stores against its original 70-store capacity. Our own store-presence data lists a small number of national brands still associated with the property, but given documented closures at similarly distressed properties elsewhere in this catalog, I’m not confident any of them remain open, and haven’t asserted specific current tenants here.

The property’s scale, sizable enough to have once supported a full mall complement in a market the size of Ashtabula, a small industrial city on Lake Erie, reflects an era of mall development that assumed sustained anchor-department-store demand that didn’t ultimately materialize at this specific site over the following three decades.
