About this mall

Arneken Galerie opened in 2012 in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony, with approximately 26,000 sqm of gross leasable area as the principal modern enclosed retail destination for Hildesheim’s city centre and the surrounding south-eastern Lower Saxony subregion. The centre is owned by Deutsche EuroShop as the primary retail investment in a historic UNESCO World Heritage city.

Hildesheim is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its Romanesque churches — the Cathedral of the Assumption and St Michael’s Church — and the historic city centre that survived World War II bombing in large part, creating a medieval urban fabric that distinguishes Hildesheim from most comparable-sized Lower Saxon cities. The Arneken Galerie’s development was integrated into this sensitive urban context, with the centre providing a modern retail circuit adjacent to the pedestrianised Hoher Weg without disrupting the historic street pattern. H&M and mainstream fashion and service retail serve a catchment defined by Hildesheim’s approximately 100,000 residents and the rural Lower Saxony communities of Peine, Alfeld, and the Leine valley. Hildesheim’s university population of approximately 10,000 adds a student spending dimension to the retail mix. Direct rail connections to Hanover place Hildesheim within 30 minutes of Lower Saxony’s state capital.

Hildesheim’s population of approximately 100,000 provides the immediate base. The southern Lower Saxony catchment from the Leine valley communities extends the regional draw to approximately 200,000. Hildesheim Hauptbahnhof provides direct regional rail connections to Hanover in approximately 30 minutes and to Göttingen southward.

Deutsche EuroShop manages Arneken Galerie as the primary retail investment in a mid-sized historic Lower Saxon city. The UNESCO designation creates a tourism overlay that supplements resident retail spending, particularly from visitors to the cathedral and the reconstructed historic market square, giving the centre a visitor dimension that comparably sized German cities without heritage designation do not possess.
