Dolce & Gabbana has launched an exclusive fragrance mist for dogs, priced at £83 ($105) on their U.K. website. The product, inspired by Fefé, the pet dog of brand owner Domenico Dolce, features a blend of “fresh and delicate notes of Ylang Ylang, Musk, and Sandalwood.” It is housed in a green lacquered glass bottle with a 24-carat gold-plated paw.

Application and certification

The alcohol-free fragrance mist can be applied directly to a dog’s body, avoiding the nose area, or sprayed onto a pet owner’s hands before being rubbed into the dog’s fur. Dolce & Gabbana claims the product is certified as suitable for animals by the Safe Pet Cosmetics program.

Concerns from animal welfare organizations

Despite these assurances, the luxury dog perfume has raised concerns among animal welfare groups. The RSPCA, among others, has cautioned that perfumes may interfere with a dog’s sensitive sense of smell. There is also criticism about anthropomorphizing pets by attributing human characteristics to them, which some argue could blur the lines between what is truly beneficial for animals and what caters to human preferences.
