The Century 21 brand is returning to New York City with its revamped flagship department store after changing ownership and overcoming financial woes.
The nearly 100-square-foot retail space in Manhattan’s Financial District will bring together familiar departments of men’s, women’s and children’s clothing, footwear, accessories, perfumes, and cosmetics. Featured brands include Givenchy, Fendi, Chloe and Hugo Boss.
For the opening of the renovated flagship, Century 21 unveiled a new logo in which the word “department stores” is replaced with “NYC,” paying homage to the brand’s founding location and the location of the famous flagship store.
Century 21 faced financial problems in 2020 amid a pandemic and restrictive measures. In September 2020, the company began its bankruptcy after 60 years in business and closed 13 department stores, including New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Florida.

Century 21 later announced it was restructuring its business as the company was bought by the family of the brand’s founder, Hindis. The retailer then resumed operations. Legends, a company specializing in upscale experiences, became a partner in the relaunch of the flagship.
“Although the past 3 years have proven a difficult time for all, New Yorkers will always endure,” Raymond Gindi, Century 21 co-chief executive officer, said in a statement. “The amount of love, passion and excitement since announcing that we are coming back has brought an energy to downtown Manhattan and we are so excited to be reopening at our original location with a focus on the designer-fashion apparel and accessories that has been a core part of our business from the start.”
New York City opened its renovated Tiffany & Co. flagship store at East 57th Street and Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
