It took 98 weeks to build the centre at a cost of £84m before it was opened during May last year.
The centre jumped ahead of centres based in Turkey and Germany to win the award of best new medium-sized development. The award was presented to the centre’s manager, Mr Neil Carter, at the International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) awards ceremony.
The award aims to give recognition to the best retail developments within Europe. For this year’s award, a short list of 12 from six countries was produced. A visit to each site was done to determine the winner.
Mike Morrissey, the managing director at ICSC, said that Whiteley has set new industry standards in design, development, performance and sustainability.  He stated that it is an exciting area to shop, relax and eat, offering visitors an innovative retail hub.
The new restaurant and cinema extension due for opening in the summer of 2015 should set the shopping centre on a new level compared to other in its class.
