British multinational groceries Tesco opened its first “reverse supermarket” to maximize donations in the run-up to Christmas. The “Give Back Express” opened in a temporary format on Poland Street, London. The grocery giant invited its customers to purchase 25 essential items to send as a donation to the FareShare and Trussell Trust charities.

To participate in the campaign, customers are asked to pay at the checkout for the selected items. Tesco will donate the cost of purchases to the charity on behalf of customers who have made purchases.

For the convenience there is a QR code at the entrance to the store, having scanned it it is possible to make the money donation via Clubcard vouchers or online. The retailer promises to compensate the cost of all products, purchased in the “reverse supermarket”.

The British retailer decided to hold the charity action amid the news about redistribution of more than 13 thousand tons of food to the needy. According to the latest data, 329 thousand people used the food banks for the first time during half a year.

Tesco is also holding its annual food drive. From Nov. 28 to Dec. 3 it is taking place with Express, and from December 1 to 3 the charity event will take place in all stores of the chain

“This winter will be increasingly challenging for many people facing food insecurity, and food banks and frontline charities need our help more than ever before. We have been working with FareShare and the Trussell Trust for 10 years and during this time, our generous customers have helped donate over 100 million meals to communities across the UK, with Tesco topping up donations by 20%.”, said Tesco CEO, Ken Murphy.
