The first "General Store by Walmart" will open in August at Getaway Hill Country in Wimberley, Texas.
The major U.S. retailer Walmart is testing a new format of mini-stores with Getaway, a health and wellness hospitality company. Under the partnership, new stores will open in tourist locations across the country.
The first "General Store by Walmart" will open in August at Getaway Hill Country in Wimberley, Texas, located near Austin and San Antonio.
Four more openings will follow before the end of the year, at Getaway Machimoodus in Moodus, Connecticut; Big Bear in Running Springs, California; Western Catskills in Roscoe, New York; and Ozark Highlands in Osceola, Missouri.
Getaway is developing a network of modern tourist outposts - minimalist vacation cabins across the country. Occupancy rates at the facilities average about 84%. The company recently opened nine more locations amid growing demand.
As part of its partnership with Walmart, the company says it intends to help consumers "live better lives in an effort to make outdoor travel even easier and more convenient." By the end of the year, the total number of outposts located less than two hours from major cities will increase to 28.
The "General Store by Walmart" format stores will sell seasonal items from the retail chain, including small business products. Merchandise selection will be done by specialists from Getaway. The assortment will include everyday items as well as camping and outdoor gear. Items selected for the retail concept will also be available for ordering through Walmart's online store.
