CEO of Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Doug McMillon, said the retailer is looking at using 3-D printers to produce supplies and is also considering buying into the market.
He finds 3-D printing interesting and said that it could be used as a method to replace parts over time, Bloomberg says.
The growing 3-D printer industry has been an opportunity as well as a threat to retailers such as Wal-Mart. It is possible to create small components and products with the device which would reduce the need for consumers to visit the store. However, retailers could make use of the technology themselves to maintain their inventory levels, which would cut costs.
McMillon was questioned on the purchase of 3-D printing companies by Wal-Mart and said that it would make sense in certain situations. He said that the company is planning to boost partnerships and acquisitions.
McMillon stated that they have been acquiring much lately, particularly talent and he believes that their level of acquisitions will accelerate in future.
