Sydney to Get New Retail Center: The Market Place Auburn

Construction work has now started on Sydney’s The Marketplace Auburn shopping center.

The $120 million ($US 103 million) redevelopment is going to create up to 1000 new jobs and  provide a modern shopping experience in the Western side of the Australian city.

The location of The Marketplace Auburn is midway between Sydney CBD and Parramatta CBD, at 92 Parramatta Road. The new retail space has been called a “sub regional shopping center” and has a catchment area that extends to more than 160,000 people.

Some Existing Retailers to Carry on During the Work
The main retailers confirmed for the mall include big brands such as Aldi, Woolworths and Kmart. The overall size of The Marketplace Auburn is of some 33,000m2. Existing retailers like Spotlight and Anaconda are planning to carry on operating from the center while the redevelopment work is carried out, before heading to new premises.

The work is being carried out by Newmark Capital Ltd and the APN Property Group Ltd. Nigel Smith is Development Director at Newmark and he said that the retail center will be getting changed from a “bulky goods center” into a “proper sub regional shopping center”. 

He went on to point out that a well as the store there will also be an extensive selection of food outlets. In addition to the food, services such as a medical service, hair dressers and nail bars will be located in the new look center at The Marketplace Auburn. The new shopping experience there has been likened to that which is offered at existing retail centers such as Stocklands in Merrylands. 

In terms of the new jobs being created through this work, there are expected to be around 300 of them for the construction work and then another 700 or so once the redevelopment work has been completed. The expected completion date for the project has been given as June 2015.
