India accounted for 4% of all global iPhone sales.
According to the latest data from Counterpoint Research, India was among the top five countries regarding iPhone sales in the second quarter. India accounted for 4% of all global iPhone sales. This allowed the country to dislodge Germany from fifth place and now India is in fourth place, following the UK, Japan, China and the US, which holds the top spot.
Apple's smartphone sales in India grew 50% in the second quarter compared to last year. The iPhone's share of the Indian smartphone market also increased to 5.1% in the second quarter, up from 3.4% a year earlier. The growing popularity of the iPhone in India and the transfer of part of the production to the country from China contributed to the opening of the first physical Apple stores in New Delhi and Mumbai in April.
Counterpoint Research analysts note that in the second quarter, smartphone sales increased only in the premium segment (smartphones with wholesale prices of $600 or more), which includes the iPhone. The growth in sales of Apple products in India was part of this trend to increase the share of premium devices in the smartphone market.
Traditionally, the Indian smartphone market has been dominated by low-cost Android smartphones manufactured by Chinese players such as Xiaomi as well as South Korea's Samsung. However, there is growth in the premium smartphone segment. As of Q2 2023, smartphones priced above $400 dollars already account for 10% of the market compared to 4% in 2019.
