The brand will refocus some of its production capacity on producing masks and other protective equipment to join the global fight against the pandemic.
Chanel intends to produce both masks and various models of protective clothing. The company is currently developing prototypes of these models and, after approval by the French authorities, production will begin.
Chanel products will be distributed to French medical organizations and other services involved in the fight against coronavirus. Volumes of production of masks and clothing for protection, which the company is ready to establish, are not yet reported. But not even too much can help the situation in the country. Already now, according to the French Minister of Health, France uses more than 40 million masks a week, and services such as police, doctors, and nurses have already begun to complain about their acute shortage.
The fashion house has also confirmed that, as a result of this step, it will not only be able to contribute to the fight against the pandemic, but also to save jobs for 4,500 employees in Chanel factories and offices. Besides, the company has also allocated 1.2 million euros to the public hospital system and promised its employees eight weeks' salary as support.
The fashion brand will join a whole group of manufacturers from the fashion and luxury goods world. Brands such as Prada, Balenciaga, Saint Laurent, and others have already announced the start of the production of protective equipment for medical and social workers. And many cosmetics companies such as Estee Lauder and LVMH have now switched to disinfectants.
