Rhein-Neckar-Zentrum Viernheim

Rhein-Neckar-Zentrum (RNZ) opened in 1972 in Viernheim, Hesse, at the Hessen-Baden border triangle between Mannheim, Heidelberg, and Darmstadt, with approximately 73,000 sqm of gross leasable area as one of West Germany’s early major retail centres and a landmark commercial investment at the junction of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area’s three federal state borders. The centre is owned and managed by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield.

Viernheim’s commercial advantage is its unique position at the administrative boundary of three German federal states — Hesse, Baden-Württemberg, and Rhineland-Palatinate — and at the geographic centre of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area. This tri-state position historically created commercial tax and planning advantages, and the A6 motorway junction makes the RNZ accessible from Mannheim (8 kilometres southwest), Heidelberg (20 kilometres southeast), and Darmstadt (30 kilometres north). The centre’s 50+ year operating history has made it a commercial institution for the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan area’s 2.4 million residents.
