Pfalz Center

Pfalz Center is an enclosed retail complex serving Kaiserslautern’s residential communities on the city’s outer edges, complementing the city-centre K in Lautern retail offer with a suburban retail format for the car-dependent western Palatinate catchment. The centre serves Kaiserslautern’s approximately 100,000 residents alongside the substantial US military community at Ramstein Air Base.

Kaiserslautern’s retail market is defined by the presence of one of Europe’s largest American military communities outside the United States: approximately 50,000 American service members, civilian employees, and dependants living in the Ramstein-Landstuhl military district create a bilingual consumer market with distinct retail preferences. Pfalz Center provides large-format and community retail for Kaiserslautern’s western residential communities in a format complementary to the city-centre K in Lautern enclosed mall. The American military community’s access to DoD exchange retail on-base (PX/BX stores) creates a parallel retail economy, but many military community members also shop in local German commercial centres for categories and brands not available through DoD channels.
