Anchored by Safeway, Future Shop and Walmart, as well as a major outlet of the Service Canada government office, Northgate Centre first opened in 1965 as Northgate Shopping Centre. It was anchored by Woodward’s department store. In 1986, a major renovation added a second storey and a two-level parking garage. Renamed Northwood Mall in 1986, it was purchased by First Capital Realty two years later. A three-year redevelopment was completed in 2002. Existing tenants, Future Shop and Safeway, were relocated and Zeller’s expanded. The second floor food court was refurbished and the mall renamed Northgate Centre. In October 2012, the Walmart Supercentre opened where Zeller’s had been.
