IKEA will buy back old furniture that has become useless.
After that, the company will find new owners for some furniture and recycle another part. It will prevent a large number of items from falling into the dumps. The action will be a part of the environmental initiatives of Ingka Group. It will start on November 24 and last until December 3.
Currently, 45% of global carbon emissions are related to how the world produces and uses everyday items such as furniture. Such actions will help to solve this problem of mindless consumption, at least in part.
It is expected that by 2021 each IKEA store will open particular points for receiving furniture that has become unnecessary. The company wants to accustom customers to the idea of a circular economy. Thus, last year 47 million restored furniture items received a second life. According to Pia Heidenmark Cook, Director of Environmental Affairs at Ingka Group, “the climate crisis requires us all to rethink consumer habits radically.
Anyone who sells back unnecessary goods will receive a coupon which can then be used to buy new IKEA products. Depending on the condition of the furniture sold, it will be possible to get up to 50% of its original value.
