The world-wide leader in the home furnishing retail market, IKEA opened a Las Vegas store on Wednesday, May 18.
The new store is the Swedish furniture manufacturers 385th store in 48 countries around the world, but the first in the state of Nevada. The store was built on a 26-acre site on the north side of the 215 Beltway near Sunset Road and South Durango Drive. The Las Vegas store is a 351,000 square-foot facility featuring a restaurant, a 1,300-space parking lot, and Nevada’s largest solar array. The store continues IKEA’s tradition of providing new ways of shopping for home furnishings in stores distinguished by unique architecture and eco-friendly solar energy use.
The store will reward enthusiastic and loyal customers by handing out thousands of dollars’ worth of gift cards and merchandise. To celebrate the opening of its 42nd US store, the first 42 adults in line received the iconic EKTORP sofa, and the POANG armchair gave out to the next 100 customers in line.
Store manager Amy Jensen has expressed IKEA’s desire to make the opening memorable for customers, and entertainment provided for customers starting Wednesday at 6 a.m. (PDT) prior to the store opening.
Clark County Commissioner Susan Brager presented at the event, joined by Göran Lithell, Deputy Chief of Mission from the Swedish Embassy, along with IKEA’s US president Lars Petersson and store manager Amy Jensen.
A joint US-Swedish event, the May 18th opening also included a flag-raising ceremony with Honorary Swedish Consul Lena Walther raising the flag of Sweden, State Senator Becky Harris raising the US flag, and State Assemblyman David Gardner honored with the raising of Nevada’s state flag.
