Tesco is a British grocery and general merchandise retailer with its headquarters based in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, England. Tesco is a multinational company with outlets all over the world; it is also the second largest retailer in the world regarding profits and revenues. Tesco is the leading grocery market in the United Kingdom dealing with fresh food and groceries, clothing, wine and other home and garden products. The company was founded back in 1919 by Jack Cohen and got its name after Cohen purchased a shipment of tea from Thomas Edward Stockwell. He used the first two letters of his surname and the initials of Thomas Edward Stockwell from who he bought the tea to get the name Tesco.
In 1929, Tesco opened its first store in Burnt Oak, Middlesex, and from there the business expanded very quickly. Within a short span of just ten years, Tesco had opened up 100 stores all across the United Kingdom. Jack Cohen was the son of Jewish emigrants from Poland; he founded the business by opening a store selling surplus groceries from another stall at Well Street Market. In 1947, Tesco was listed as Tesco Stores (Holdings) Limited on the London Stock Exchange.
