A top clothing retailer from Japan, Uniqlo, has announced that it will be opening two flagship stores within Toronto during 2016
The stores will be located at Toronto Eaton Center and Yorkdale Shopping Center.
Uniqlo is a top international group, with 1500 stores within the US, the UK, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Russia, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Germany, France, China, Australia and Japan.
This announcement comes in the wake of Target Canada going through the process of 133 store closures after a disastrous attempt at entering the marketplace. This will result in joblessness for 17600 people during spring. The Starbucks cafes within these stores have already closed.
The chief executive officer of Uniqlo USA and Canada, Larry Meyer, believes that Uniqlo will gain success in a market where Target was unsuccessful as it is making a small-scale entry into the market. He hopes that the brand will be able to expand to Vancouver and other cities within Canada.
The group offers consumers affordable, stylish, comfortable casual clothing, without logos, suitable for all age groups. The materials used in the manufacture of the range are designed to perform well in various climates. Its range is diverse.
Uniqlo is a particular brand under the umbrella of Fast Retailing Co. Ltd, an international retail holding company in Japan, which produces and sells clothing under seven brands, such as Helmut Lang and Theory.
Global sales for the group for the 2014 August 31 fiscal year end reached around US$13.3bn.
The store at Eaton Center will place Uniqlo into direct competition with H&M, which is located next door. It will move into the space which was left empty by Sears Canada.
The Yorkdale store, measuring 24000ft², is due to open in the same space as Nordstrom, along with 27 other new tenants.
The Yorkdale general manager, Claire Santamaria, said this is a strong brand, with a strong global presence. She added that they offer unique products which should suit the Yorkdale consumer appetite.
Recruitment for Uniqlo staffing will be done within Canada and more information can be found at #UniqloCanada on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.
