Britain’s largest retailer, Tesco, is set to launch its first owned smartphone by the end of this year.
The group is hoping to build on the success of the tablet which it launched last year, called the Hudl.
It has been confirmed that the phone will operate on Google’s Android software and will come with pre-installed Tesco services.
Since its launch, Tesco has sold in excess of 500000 Hudl tablets. The company has plans to launch a second version of the tablet during the latter part of this year.
The CEO of the company, Philip Clarke, last month made a vow to try and win back consumers with price cuts amounting to millions of pounds. This came after the company issued figures showing a second year of declining profits.
