Starbucks is opening its first teahouse in Manhattan.
You are able to buy a cup of tea at Starbucks, but you will not be able to get a cup of coffee at Teavana. The tea house is strategically placed close to Dean & DeLuca and Lululemon on the Upper East Side of the city.
The CEO of Starbucks, Howard Schultz, said the difference between the two stores will be like night and day. He said the tea house is more Zen-like than any Starbucks store.
The store is very different to its Starbucks sister and offers visitors light wood, fashionably colored walls and lighting that you would find in a museum. There is no Starbucks branding, but it does offer a ‘Wall of Tea’ where a range of tea blends and loose-leaf teas can be found.
This is a baby step into the huge global tea market. Tea is second only to water on a global drinking scale. The group plans to open at least 1000 Teavana bars in North America and several more outside US borders. The plan is to do for tea what it has done for coffee.
A second bar is set to open in Seattle by Thanksgiving.
