Starbucks has announced plans to open up one of its signature Reserve Roastery locations in Chicago. This will mark the company’s third iteration of the sprawling concept in the United States, behind the opening of a Seattle location in 2014 and one that’s on tap for New York City in 2018. Several international locations are in the works as well, with a Shanghai location on track to open later this year, and additional spots in Milan and Tokyo scheduled to debut next year.
“Having opened our first Starbucks store in Chicago nearly 30 years ago, our first outside of Seattle, this is a very special city for me. At the time, it was a true test for Starbucks because the Chicago customer is so savvy and discerning about their coffee,” said Howard Schultz, Starbucks executive chairman.
Beyond the caffeine fix, customers are in for a real treat as this is not your average everyday Starbucks experience. The Chicago Roastery will span four-stories and 43,000-square-feet, and the innovative concept is designed to immerse consumers in a full coffee experience. Specifically, the store will be dedicated roasting, brewing, and packaging exquisite small-batch Starbucks Reserve coffees from across the globe.
“Chicago is a city of neighborhoods, so we took our time to find an incredible space to match the unprecedented coffee experience our premium Roastery will offer. To be located on one of the best-known retail streets in the world is a proud moment for all of us and we can’t wait to bring Chicago and the world a coffee experience worthy of their most premier real estate,” Schultz added.
Outside of coffee, the Roastery will offer up fresh baking on the site that will be aimed at each daypart. Starbucks has big plans for the Roastery concept, as current plans call for up to 30 locations globally and as many as 1,000 Reserve stores.
“Chicago’s Magnificent Mile brings in millions of visitors from across this globe and is the perfect location for a world-class coffee destination,” Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said. “This Starbucks Reserve Roastery will be an investment in Chicago and a strong addition to Michigan Avenue, where residents and visitors can enjoy incredible coffees from around the world in a remarkable environment,” Emanuel continued.
