Erling Persson founded the company after a trip to the United States. He came up with the idea of creating a business the offered fashionable clothing at affordable prices and in 1947, Erling Persson started his first shop “Hennes” in Vasteras, Sweden which exclusively sold women’s clothing. “Hennes” in Swedish means “hers” and “for her.” In 1968, the company acquired the hunting apparel retailer Mauritz Widforss which led to it being joined with the existing “Hennes,” to include a new menswear collection and the company’s name was changed to “Hennes & Mauritz” or H&M.
There are over 200 H&M stores located across the United Kingdom.
