Boasting nearly 4.2 million square feet of building area and nearly 2.5 million square feet of that currently being used as retail space, the Mall of America comes in at number one on our Top 10 Malls of North America. This king of beasts hosts over 520 stores including Macy’s, Nordstrom, Bloomingdales and Sears and utilizes approximately 11,000 employees to keep the place running - no wonder this mall hits top place on our list! Located in Bloomington, Minnesota the mall was originally opened in 1992 with an intent to serve as more than just a shopping mall. The mall was designed to be a destination attraction offering retail and entertainment facilities and allowing visitors to not just shop at their favourite stores, but to also have a chance to ride a roller coaster, watch a movie, meet their favourite celeb or build a LEGO house in the same day and under the same roof.
There are plenty of restaurants for shoppers to get refuelled, because with .57 miles of walking distance per level, food will definitely be a priority when shopping here. Some other attractions worth noting here include 25 rides, 14 movie theatre screens, 1.2 million gallon aquarium at Underwater Adventures Aquarium, Nickelodeon Universe, Dinosaur Walk Museum, A.C.E.S flight Simulation, NASCAR Silicon Motor Speedway, a high-school campus called Metropolitan Learning Alliance, fitness facilities and marriage facilities in case you feel like tying the knot while you’re shopping. It shouldn’t surprise you that the mall generates $2 billion in economic activity a year. If you’re planning on shopping here though, make sure you put your most comfortable running shoes on because you will have a guaranteed workout just walking through this behemoth of a complex.
