The mall in Doha, the capital of Qatar, opened with the ceremony marked by 2,000 performers in over 20 shows.Developed over 500,000 square meters, the $1.48-billion mall houses over 500 brands of high street fashion, footwear, health, food and pharmacy, beauty, optics and home furnishing brands, including over 100 food and beverage cafes.
It also houses a 19-screen cinema operated by Novo, which includes VIP screens and in gourmet food options. The theaters are equipped with IMAX’s laser projection and sound systems, advanced 4D projection technology with extraordinary effects and seats that move in synchronization with the movie.
“It was a day filled with great experiences and great times that set the tone for what is yet to come. We are looking forward to welcoming more guests from near and far,” Rony Mourani, general manager, Mall of Qatar, said in a press statement.
Consultancy experts AT Kearney last year stated that Qatar was emerging as the most attractive market for retailers in the Middle East with entire retail sales at $12.4 billion.
Earlier this month, Dubai-based Al-Futtaim Group opened its $1.8-billion Doha Festival City which was spread over 165,000 square meters.
Forecast to get over 20 million visitors a year, The Oasis at Mall of Qatar has been created for live shows with transformative lighting and sound. Also, it has a 360-degree turning theatrical stage where up to 25 dancers, actors, singers, and acrobats can perform live. The shopping mall parking has 10000 car lots. Its food court and dining zones surrounding the Oasis have a seated place of 2,600 people. The Mall is also conjoined with the 5-star AlRayyan Hotel which is managed by Hilton under its Curio label.
In addition to the show by British classical crossover vocal group Il Divo, the opening festivals were marked by performances by Shaolin Warriors and Dinosaur Zoo live among others.
