The Mall Beckons

Philippines: The allure of the mall has endured a long time for some. Midnight sales, shopping and dining in an enclosed area, when climate is unfavorable, are a few of many perks.

There was a time when the town plaza would have been seen in a similar light to our modern urban mall: a meeting place, a venue for live performances. But today, the concept has evolved into an integrated facility with endless opportunities for creative expression and convenience. Its been called an experience.

Skylights, clerestory windows and indoor landscaping are practically an essential feature of a mall, bringing a feeling of the outdoors without the harsh elements to contend with. Plants bring a sense of life and drama for some.

While live performances happen in a select few theaters, malls brim over with movie houses, possibly the biggest crowd drawer in any mall. Many malls compete for the most comfortable seat, the widest leg room and the most easily accessible toilets. Lobbies have to be appropriately designed to attract crowds. But all in all, malls hold the potential to offer boundless forms of entertainment, all under one roof, and a place for community to meet.
