Holidays and Malls

June 15, 2009

You would think, the way malls have taken over the city of Jakarta, that there was no life beyond a world of indoor playgrounds, fast food clowns and window shopping. But holidays do matter, and they extend way beyond anything a shopping mall might hope to accomplish.

Holidays are about letting your kids play in the garden, or organizing cooking activities. They’re about family visits and play dates with neighborhood friends, or exploring nearby playgrounds. They’re also about picnics and bar-b-ques and games and good food. All of these things and more making holidays special.

While some of these things can be had at a mall, it is good to consider alternatives, as well. Family fun can include things that don’t involve video games or shopping at the mall! Festivals, book events, camping, movies and other family outings are all worth considering.
