Singapore’s Malls Going Green with Energy Smart Retail Malls
The NEA is Singapore’s National Environmental Agency and has recently identified two of the country’s first two energy smart retail malls in their efforts to promote energy efficacy and lower operating costs, according to local media.
Reports from TV broadcasters indicate that NEA has given it’s energy smart retail mall label to the top 25% of shopping malls that have participated in efforts to maintaining energy efficiency and promoting a healthier indoor environment quality.
Anchor Point mall, was one of the successful label winners and had reportedly spent approximately 455,000 Singapore dollars (equivalent to approximately $302,000 USD) to environmentally upgrading its air-condition system, which has successfully reduced electricity consumption by 1,192 mega-watts per year. Liang Court, a family centered mall, was another success story, that was recognized for bringing down its electricity consumption by approximately 500 mega-watts per year.
Singapore has recently taken efforts to promote green initiatives by identifying the clean energy industry as a strategic key growth industry for the country in relation to it’s Asian counterparts. According to the Clean Energy blueprint of the city-state, an expected $170 million Singapore dollars (approximately $111 million USD) is to be generated in the clean energy sector adding approximately 7,000 new jobs by 2015.
